What Happens When Nothing Happens?

In ‘An Attempt at Exhausting a Place’ Georges Perec explores the concept of the “infraordinary,”

“What happens when nothing happens?”

He observed and recorded the minutiae of everyday life in Place Saint-Sulpice, Paris. I took this same approach to documenting the everyday in the Olympic Park, Stratford, through field-based writing and recording.

The resulting binaural audio works are non-linear, sensory meditations on place. As stand-alone pieces they can be experienced anywhere. Listeners are invited to revisit the original sites where past and present combine in an atemporal haunting of place.

Field recordings from the Olympic Park in Stratford — captured binaurally with the Sennheiser Ambeo Smart Headset and directionally with the Sennheiser MKH 8060 — form the foundation of the works.

An Avenue Lined with Trees includes an ambisonic recording of the Somerset House Choir made with the Reynolds Atype 8. Additional sound design was created using the Sound Particles 3D synth, SkyDust. Created and mixed in Dolby Atmos.

Listeners are encouraged to disable headphone noise cancellation so that environmental sounds can merge with the binaural mix.
